The collection of a contributory retirement pension is not exempt from compliance with a series of conditions and requirements, among which, above all, that of prior contribution stands out: a minimum of 15 years of contributions is needed to be able to collect this benefit, which they currently receive more than 6.2 million people in Spain.

But, what happens to people who have not been able to prove that minimum period of 15 years? This may be due to multiple reasons (housewives, workers who receive the money in black and without contributing, people who simply have not reached those contributions because they have not worked…) but in all cases it makes it impossible for these people to collect a contributory retirement pension. Therefore, the system provides them with another resource.

These are non- contributory non-retirement pensions , those that are granted to people who have not complied with the contributory contribution requirement and that ensure “all citizens over 65 years of age and in a state of need an economic benefit, free medical-pharmaceutical assistance and complementary social services”.

These people will be considered, like those who receive the contributory pension, pensioners in the eyes of Social Security. They will simply receive a lower amount, since their benefit appears as a kind of basic economic coverage in the absence of contributions.

The requirements of the non-contributory retirement pension
However, the absence of contributions and reaching the age of 65 are not the only requirements that applicants for a non-contributory retirement pension must meet. The IMSERSO explains them on its website :

-You must prove residence in Spanish territory for ten years from the date of reaching the age of 16 until retirement age. Two of those ten years must be consecutive and immediately prior to the application for the pension.

-Lack income of more than 5,899.60 euros per year. In the event that the applicant lives with more people (up to the second degree of consanguinity or affinity: spouse, children, parents, grandparents, grandchildren and siblings) in their cohabitation unit, the income limits are different: 10,029.32 euros per year for two people, 14,159.04 euros per year for three people and 18,288.76 euros per year for four or more people.

If the pensioner lives with one of their children or parents, the limit amounts are raised: 25,073.30 euros per year for two people, 35,397.60 euros per year for three people and 45,721.90 euros per year for four or more people in the unit of coexistence.

The amount you receive in the non-contributory retirement pension
The amount of these non-contributory pensions is regulated and is updated each year with the approval of the Budgets. Specifically, for 2022 an increase of 3% was approved for these benefits ( along with minimum pensions and the Minimum Vital Income ), a rise above the rise in inflation that has left the amounts as follows:

-The amount of the full pension is 421.40 euros per month and 5,899.60 euros per year.

-The amount of the 25% pension is 105.35 euros per month and 1,474.90 euros per year.

-The amount of the pension if two beneficiaries of the same pension coincide in a family unit is 358.19 euros per month and 5,014.66 euros per year for each of them.

-The amount of the pension if three or more beneficiaries of the same pension coincide in a family unit is 337.12 euros per month and 4,719.68 euros per year for each of them.
